Gold in the Net Awards Bursaries to 5 Students
On May 1st Gold in the Net presented 5 past students, each with a $1,000.00 Bursary Award. This brings the total of bursaries handed out over the past 5 years to $25,000.00 through the Aaron C. Cornwell Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Aaron Cornwell was a student of Gold in the Net whose life was tragically cut short from a car accident 1999. He was a self driven and motivated person. He knew everything he wanted to do and how to do it. He planned on playing hockey in the BCHL while furthering his education to become a Marine Biologist.
In 2005 Gold in the Net began again raising the bar in the hockey school industry with another first. Gold in the Net founded The Aaron C. Cornwell Memorial Scholarship Fund, which brought Aaron’s two passions together in an annual event that will help others excel in both their hockey and academic pursuits.
On hand to present the awards were Gold in the Net founder Perry Elderbroom along with Mike and Diana Cornwell. This year’s recipients of the award included 4 past students from British Columbia and one from Alberta. Garrett Mate, Ben Witmer, Melinda Choy, Dustin Burns and Michael Saunders each received a Bursary of $1,000.00
Saturday May 1st was also host to the 5th Annual Golf Classic in support of the Aaron C. Cornwell Memorial Scholarship Fund. The event began with 18 rounds of golf at Morningstar Golf Course on beautiful Vancouver Island, dinner and silent auction followed before finishing the evening off with the presentation of the Bursary Awards.
This year saw 76 golfers attend the event with over 110 attending the dinner and silent auction. Some of the items in the auction were a signed Henrik Lundqvist jersey; Rick Nash signed jersey, a diamond necklace valued at over $2,000.00. Other hot items included 12 live lobsters delivered to the door of the highest bidder. The event was a great success and a good time was had by all.
