Gold in the Net Awards Bursaries to 5 Students

On May 1st Gold in the Net presented 5 past students, each with a $1,000.00 Bursary Award. This brings the total of bursaries handed out over the past 5 years to $25,000.00 through the Aaron C. Cornwell Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Aaron Cornwell was a student of Gold in the Net whose life was tragically cut short from a car accident 1999. He was a self driven and motivated person. He knew everything he wanted to do and how to do it. He planned on playing hockey in the BCHL while furthering his education to become a Marine Biologist.

In 2005 Gold in the Net began again raising the bar in the hockey school industry with another first. Gold in the Net founded The Aaron C. Cornwell Memorial Scholarship Fund, which brought Aaron’s two passions together in an annual event that will help others excel in both their hockey and academic pursuits.

On hand to present the awards were Gold in the Net founder Perry Elderbroom along with Mike and Diana Cornwell. This year’s recipients of the award included 4 past students from British Columbia and one from Alberta. Garrett Mate, Ben Witmer, Melinda Choy, Dustin Burns and Michael Saunders each received a Bursary of $1,000.00

Saturday May 1st was also host to the 5th Annual Golf Classic in support of the Aaron C. Cornwell Memorial Scholarship Fund. The event began with 18 rounds of golf at Morningstar Golf Course on beautiful Vancouver Island, dinner and silent auction followed before finishing the evening off with the presentation of the Bursary Awards.

This year saw 76 golfers attend the event with over 110 attending the dinner and silent auction. Some of the items in the auction were a signed Henrik Lundqvist jersey; Rick Nash signed jersey, a diamond necklace valued at over $2,000.00. Other hot items included 12 live lobsters delivered to the door of the highest bidder. The event was a great success and a good time was had by all.

GITN Remains Active at the Olympics

Henrik Lundqvist Gold MedalHenrik Lundqvist and Antero Niittymaki not only represent their homeland Sweden and Finland, but they also represent Gold in the Net.  Both have spent time training with Gold in the Net over the years. Lundqvist is one of the owner operators of Gold in the Net – Sweden, while Niittymaki remains active with the Finland franchise owned and operated by fellow Finnish goaltender Fredrik Norrena. This will be the second Olympics for both Lundqvist and Niittymaki and everyone at Gold in the Net is wishing them all the success.

Henrik Lundqvist End of Game

In the last Olympics held in Turin, Italy there were three goalies representing Gold in the Net. All three returned with medals, Henrik Lundqvist took home the Gold for Sweden while Antero Niittymaki and Fredrik Norrena took Silver for Finland. Niittymaki was named tournament MVP. It was an exciting for GITN founder Perry Elderbroom who trained all of them at one point or another. “It was a very special time for those guys and myself personally.” Said Elderbroom who has been travelling over to Scandinavia for more then 20 years to train goalies there. “When you see the work and effort that these guys put into their game, you can’t help but cheer for them.”

Earlier last season while Elderbroom was with the Columbus Blue Jackets he spoke with Team Canada’s Steve Yzerman about a goaltending position with the team. “I think they were genuinely interested in the fact that I have worked with so many European goalies and have great knowledge of the game here and overseas.” Elderbroom further when on to say “He was also very interested in the play of Steve Mason, and wanted to know if he was for real.” Yzerman said that they were not sure at the time if the team would name a goalie coach for such a short tournament, as they felt very secure with goalie situation, and would in all likelihood take that position for an assistant coach. Elderbroom said that he would have loved nothing more to be involved with Team Canada.  “I was honoured with the possibilities and I will be cheering for Team Canada as I am Canadian, but also I will be rooting for our fellow Gold in the Net goalies as well.”

GITN President & CEO passes on return to Columbus

Perry at GM Place with the Columbus Bluejackets

Perry Elderbroom, the President and CEO of Gold in the Net, spent last season as the goaltending consultant for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL.  The team had their most successful season ever, making the playoffs for the first time in team history.  The team also had their best ever goalie stat to finish off the season. Rookie Steve Mason won the Calder trophy for Rookie of the Year and was the nominated for the Vezina trophy for best goalie.

Perry thoroughly enjoyed his time in Columbus during the 2008-09 season; He found it put a strain on his duties with Gold in the Net and he elected to remain with Gold in the Net and not return to Columbus He wishes the team, management and the players the very best for this hockey season.
